Beckton LEZ cameras to target haulage vehicles

Date: 02 August 2007

The mystery of the large cameras that have appeared along the A13 at Beckton has been cleared up, as Transport for London (TfL) revealed that they are Low Emissions Zone (LEZ) enforcement cameras, designed to catch haulage vehicles that do not meet strict standards.

From February 4th next year, haulage lorries weighing more than 12 tonnes will have to meet Euro III emission standards. Lighter trucks and large vans will be included later.

Drivers in Beckton were confused by the new cameras - which look like giant hairdryers - installed on the A13. Many wrote in to the Newham recorder speculating on what their role may be, with some believing they could be part of a new reality TV show.

However, TfL has admitted that they will be used to make sure haulage companies are complying with the LEZ regulations. Operators were also urged to act now to make any changes to vehicles before the LEZ comes into effect.

TfL had previously been testing cameras that use ultraviolet and infrared light to scan haulage trucks for exhaust fumes and record their number plates.
