VOSA to carry on checking haulage vehicles
Date: 31 July 2007
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) is to incorporate the recent work it has been doing to check haulage vehicles in the south-east into its normal targeted enforcement work.
VOSA carried out a spot check on international freight vehicles on July 3rd and 4th in Kent, exposing a number of transgressions including defective tyres and excessive driver hours.
It was part of the South East International Pilot, which has now been expanded into the group's regular work, meaning that VOSA will continue to target international vehicles and carry out safety checks on both trucks and drivers.
The checking will be mainly done around ports on a 24/7 shift system covering Eurotunnel, Dover and Ramsgate, and on the inland road network.
So that freight haulage drivers are aware of the checking, VOSA will distribute leaflets in several languages (English, German, French, Spanish and Polish). They will explain the consequences of failing to comply with VOSA standards.
A notice on the leaflet reads: "If regulations have been contravened, you or your vehicle could be issued with a prohibition notice, and will not be allowed to continue your journey."
Kevin Jury, a senior vehicle examiner at VOSA, said: "We are delighted with the success that the project has enjoyed so far and are confident that this new phase will help to further improve road safety."
