Fewer haulage firms recruiting

Date: 25 July 2007

Fewer haulage companies are recruiting new drivers in spite of the fact that there is a shortage in the industry, according to a Manpower survey.

The recruitment specialist found that the difference between the number of hauliers planning to recruit and those planning lay-offs is narrowing, RoadTransport.com reports.

Of the haulage firms surveyed, 19 per cent were planning to take on more drivers and 15 per cent were planning to let some go. The difference between the two figures is down by eight per cent since the last quarter.

However, Manpower's Simon Edwards noted that the results are far from conclusive about the state of the haulage industry.

"While the results suggest that the anticipated hiring trend is lower than in the last couple of years, it is too early to tell if this is a blip or part of a longer-term dip," he said.

Meanwhile, a separate study by Manpower showed that retaining staff is the most pressing human resources issue affecting employers in the UK this year.

More than 70 per cent of respondents said that staff retention would be an HR priority this year.
