Courier companies to benefit from two weeks' strike action
Date: 23 July 2007
Courier firms are likely to benefit from a new round of postal strikes that will cause continuous disruption to Royal Mail services for two weeks.
Following two previous 24-hour strikes in the last few weeks, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) has threatened an escalation in the industrial action in Royal Mail that will disrupt services from July 25th to August 8th.
"The strikes call out separate functions nationally on different days and the timing is aimed at maximising the impact on mail," said a CWU spokesman.
The dispute relates to pay and plans to modernise the company, but the CWU believes Royal Mail management has so far failed to take the workers seriously.
Continuous disruption over two weeks will mean upset to the business of companies up and down the country, and is likely to persuade firms to use alternative courier companies to deliver packages.
According to the Guardian, various courier firms have already benefited from the previous strikes. Citipost has won new customers such as the Economist magazine, and DX says it will make more than £10 million this year as a result of the Royal Mail action.
