TfL 'not giving enough information about LEZ'

Date: 19 July 2007

There is not enough information coming through from the government about the upcoming London low emission zone (LEZ), according to a former manager of the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (Vosa).

Mike Henning told Commercial Motor that, because Transport for London (TfL) is not being entirely forthcoming with information concerning the LEZ, Vosa is likely to be inundated by enquiries regarding compliance by haulage vehicles.

"What information is appearing is coming in dribs and drabs," he said. "Vosa is the innocent victim in this because although it has the contract, it hasn't been supplied with enough detail. TfL is talking about Euro-3 but it hasn't specified what the particulate matter value will be."

He also said that most Euro-1 engines meet the Euro-2 and Euro-3 particulate matter value of 0.4mg/m3.

Freight operators may also be able to fit a filter rather than a particulate trap to bring engines up to the required standard, which is a cheaper option.

The low emission zone is due to come into effect on February 4th next year.
