Increased trailer demand leads to axle shortage

Date: 18 July 2007

A surge of demand from transport firms in Europe has led to a shortage of haulage trailer axles within the industry, according to research.

A study by consultancy CLEAR found that transport firms across the continent are buying large numbers of new trailers, as used trailers are increasingly shipped off to eastern Europe.

Russia, Poland and Turkey have a particularly strong demand for used trailers, accounting for more than 60 per cent of eastern Europe's demand, with the market in Poland increasingly especially sharply.

"These markets will grow for a very long time," said CLEAR's director, Gary Beecroft. "It took Spain 15 to 20 years to reach the level of trailer utilisation seen in the rest of the EU when it joined.

"However, the growth in the future will be relatively modest compared to that seen from 2000 to 2006."

Around 200,000 new trailers will be sold in western Europe by the end of this year, the study found.

With many countries in the region having recently joined the EU, business is booming in the region and logistics and road haulage are on the up.
