New regulations for waste haulage firms

Date: 13 July 2007

Waste haulage firms will be affected by new regulations that were introduced this week (July 12th).

The UK ships around ten million tons of waste each year, the British International Freight Association (BIFA) reports, and the draft Trans-frontier Shipment of Waste Regulations 2007 has now come into effect.

It has transposed EC Regulation 1013/2006. It will now be an offence to transport, import or export waste without completing an Annex V11 document in accordance with article 18 (1) (a) or Regulation (EC) no. 1013/2006.

BIFA issued this warning: "If you're currently involved in the international movement of waste you need to be aware of Government's proposals regarding illegal shipments and check any consignments are being moved in accordance with the relevant controls."

The group added that a large number of its members are involved in moving waste loads and will be aware of the changes already.

BIFA aims to provide "effective representation and support for the UK international freight services industry".
