AA: More than a third of UK van drivers are women

Date: 12 July 2007

More than a third of the UK's commercial van drivers are women, according to a study by AA Insurance.

The results of the survey suggest that a significant proportion of van couriers in Britain are women, giving the lie to the idea that the overwhelming majority of vans are driven by men. In fact, 35 per cent of commercial van drivers are women.

In terms of the top five van professions, delivery couriers or drivers are in second position, behind builders. Shopkeepers, electricians and handymen complete the top five.

The AA Insurance Van Value Study also showed that small business van drivers are hard working, with average yearly earnings of £21,000. This means that they collectively contribute more than £35 billion to the UK economy each year, and have a turnover of £215 billion.

Meanwhile, many van drivers use their vehicle outside work hours, with 13 per cent saying they prefer it to their car, and more than half (56 per cent) using it for shopping. More than one in twenty admitted to engaging in "romantic liaisons" in their van.
