London Low Emission Zone (LEZ)
Date: 11 July 2007
The London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is due to come into effect from February 4th, 2008, in order to deter the most polluting vehicles from driving in the area.
It will affect older, diesel-engined lorries, buses, coaches, large vans (those exceeding 1.205 tonnes in weight, unladen) and minibuses, and will be phased in between February 2008 and January 2012. It will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.
The zone covers most of Greater London, following the Greater London Authority boundary, and extends to Barnet in the north, Rainham in the east, Biggin Hill in the south and Heathrow in the west.
All public roads within this boundary are included in the LEZ. This includes certain motorways (parts of the M1 and M4), but not the M25.
The zone will be delineated by signs at entry points, informing drivers they are entering the LEZ.
The charge will be £200 per day for lorries, buses and coaches, and £100 per day for heavy vans and minibuses, which do not meet the necessary emissions standards. Penalty charges for non-payment are £1,000 per day for lorries and £500 per day for vans.
Vehicles that do not meet the pollution standards can be modified by fitting pollution reducing equipment or a cleaner engine.

Will you please explain why there has been one of the offending signs located at the junction of Melody Road in Biggin Hill. A road, which to the best of my knowledge is not adopted by tfl. The same applies to many other locations in Biggin Hill.

I am all for making London cleaner but I despise that Nazi-like draconian crook Livingstone and his horrendous Extortion For London (TfL) who are obsessed with extorting as much extra tax from motorists as possible. It is sickening that this LEZ has cluttered up thousands of london roads with ugly grey cameras and unnecessary signs. GET RID OF KEN LIVINGSTONE and scrap all these taxes!
