New haulage safety campaign for Kent

Date: 10 July 2007

The Highways Agency and its partners in Kent are set to launch Operation Lexicon, designed to improve road safety by changing the way haulage and freight companies operate on the road.

Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Kent County Council and Medway Council will all contribute to the scheme and the changes are likely to have a notable impact upon haulage companies in the area.

The scheme will target the M20 junctions 3 to 6 and junctions 9 to 11 as well as the A20 Folkestone to Dover.

Policies include an increase in the number of night-time police officer patrols on the M20. Freight companies can also expect mobile electronic message signs to warn lorry drivers to increase their distance or watch their speed.

The extra evening and night-time police patrols on the M20 and A20 will also help in combating fatigue, which is said to be one of the leading causes of collisions between drivers on these roads.

"Operation Lexicon is the first inter-agency casualty reduction operation led by Kent's new partnership. Two particular locations on the M20 were defined by analysis as susceptible to collisions involving lorries," said Adrian Moody, chief inspector of Kent Police.

"It is these locations and vehicle types that will be targeted with a view to reducing such collisions and influencing driver behaviour," he added.
