Dalton's Transport has been on the same site near Southampton since the UK logistics business started in 1987 by Kevin Dalton. He had previously been in the construction industry but felt that transport was a better place to be. After twenty years he says you can still make a living from logistics in the UK but it is getting harder – and our freight exchange makes it that little bit easier.
Kevin is currently running a fleet of 20 haulage vehicles (17 artics and three vans) and classes himself as a general haulier with a turnover of £3m. Kevin still runs his own workshop and 30,000 sq ft of warehousing on the one site. Although, he says, that is changing with the amount of imported traffic coming through Southampton. He is looking to diversify into container de-stuffing and onward distribution or local storage. "We have always faced challenges and with Bacardi moving out in August 2007," he says, "the business will evolve yet again".
Dalton's Transport has never used a freight exchange before but is finding Haulage Exchange very useful for back loads. "Getting back from Scotland is particularly difficult," says Kevin. More importantly Kevin has found the freight exchange to be very good in finding new haulage partners. Already Dalton's is working with Shears Bros of Bournemouth and Browns Distribution of Stoke-on-Trent and this is helping the UK logistics company meet its new challenges.
